1st July 2018 race report

Cup 4

The very usable south easterly winds meant starting towards the dam with Dam Red as the buoy to round before beginning the run up the Lake. Penny Abbott (Laser Radial) and Adam Hilton (Solo) were over start line 2 at the gun. Penny turned back but Adam was first round Dam Red, blissfully unaware that he was disqualifying himself! Sue Murray (Laser Radial) led at Inlet and continued to fight off the full-sailed Lasers of Bob Sampson and Nathan Pollard who followed. At Pinkie the drizzle continued, as it did throughout, and the order was still Sue Murray, Bob Sampson, Nathan Pollard, the outlaw Hilton Solo, Paul Whybrow’s legal Solo, the recovering Penny Abbott, John Dabbs’ Gull and Cilla Gilbert at the helm of Brian Pollard’s Bosun. But by the end of lap 2 Bob Samson had managed to get speed out of his big sail and had overtaken Sue Murray. On lap three Nathan Pollard did too. When the handicaps were applied the corrected times gave the Gull the victory by a minute and Sue Murray a lead over Bob Sampson of five seconds!

1. John Dabbs (Gull)

2. Sue Murray (Laser Radial)

3. Bob Sampson (Laser Full)

4. Paul Whybrow (Solo) and equal 4th Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)

5.

6. Penny Abbott (Laser Radial)

7. Cilla Gilbert and Brian Pollard (Bosun)

Disqualified: Adam Hilton (Solo)

Tamar 6

Nathan Pollard, now with a Radial sail and in a slightly stronger but much drier wind, got away first with Bob Sampson second, Linda Spiller (Laser Full) third, Penny Abbott fourth, Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert next and Sue Murray last. Penny Abbott got past Linda Spiller at Dam Red, then Bob Sampson passed Nathan at the end of the run to Middle, squeezing him at the buoy. At the end of the lap Bob Sampson was pulling away, Penny Abbott and Linda Spiller were catching up Nathan Pollard with Sue Murray not far behind. By lap 3 Bob Sampson was miles ahead, finishing two minutes in front of Nathan Pollard, enough to overcome his handicap disadvantage and give him first on corrected time. The other Lasers continued to scrap, with Linda Spiller finishing third and Sue Murray managing to get over the line a couple of seconds in front of Penny Abbott.

1. Bob Sampson (Laser Full)

2. Nathan Pollard (Laser Radial)

3. Sue Murray (Laser Radial)

4. Penny Abbott (Laser Radial)

5. Linda Spiller (Laser Full)

6. Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun)

Many thanks to Jane and Paul Anderson who ran the race and wrote these reports to Mandy Pollard who took the photos.

27th June race report

Midweek Mug 4

In the morning the sun shone, the wind blew, boats were returned to the smart new boat park and work progressed on the pontoon. At lunch time the sun shone and the wind blew but by race time, although the sun remained steadfast, the wind became fickle, coming and going from various points east. Three familiar Bosuns took to the water but their crew combinations were new. The club’s Rob Eason was helmed by Cilla Gilbert and crewed by Sally Wills. Brian Pollard steered his own with Roger Heasman as crew and the Commodore’s boat had Paul Whybrow at the helm with John Dabbs as crew. Linda Spiller’s Radial and Adam Hilton’s Solo completed the fleet.

Linda crossed the line first, with Adam following, Paul next and Brian after him. The single- handers went ahead on the way to Inlet and across to west, but before they got to Pinkie the wind dropped and the extra three square metres of sail on the Solo became more important than its ten kilogram weight penalty and it squeezed ahead before the buoy. The following Bosuns came up fast. On the long beat back up the Lake Linda judged her tacks better and was ahead again at Dam Green, which she touched. The resultant penalty turn let the Solo ahead again. Linda got the lead back by the end of the lap. Much the same pattern repeated on laps three and four and Linda crossed the finish line thirteen seconds ahead. The Whybrow/Dabbs Bosun played similar games with the Pollard/Heasman boat. Brian got ahead for a bit on both laps one and two but Paul was always ahead at the lap ends. He finished half a minute up with water swishing round his ankles in a leaky Commodore Bosun.

  1. Adam Hilton (Solo)
  2. Linda Spiller (Laser Radial)
  3. Paul Whybrow and John Dabbs (Bosun)
  4. Brian Pollard and Roger Heasman (Bosun)

Retired: Cilla Gilbert and Sally Wills (Bosun)

Many thanks to Nicky Buckett who ran the race and to Robin Spiller  who took the photos.

24th June 2018 race report

Commodore 4

This was a race in which there were zephyrs of wind that flickered and died, often leaving boats that had followed them stranded. The sun beat down and the Race Officer set a beat to Dam Red as first mark. Linda Spiller (Laser Full) was first across the line but then lost momentum. There seemed to be more wind on the Cornwall bank, immediately in front of the Watersports Centre – Robin Spiller (Streaker) and Jane Anderson (Laser Full) opted to follow this, but the breeze then died and left them stranded.  Nathan Pollard (Laser Full) was eventually the first to round Dam Red; Linda Spiller picked up momentum and was second round. Jane Anderson was third.

These three boats continued moving – and were up past Middle and heading for Pinky whilst the bulk of the fleet were still stuck trying to round Dam Red.  For minutes they went nowhere (often backwards or in circles) – Robin Spiller (Streaker) retired at this point – and it took a long while to start moving.

Eventually Nathan Pollard emerged from the invisible part of the course round West White in the lead; Jane Anderson just behind, but Jane had to put in a tack to get back across to Zebra and temporarily fell back a little.

The Wayfarer, with Mike Herbert-Coulson at the helm and Vicki generally nifty with the spinnaker, tried to fly the sail but was unsuccessful and found itself some way back behind the four Lasers that made up the leading quartet.

Of the two Solos, Paul Whybrow’s and Adam Hilton’s, Adam’s had fared better in the start line lottery and was up to, if hardly dicing with, the Wayfarer until one of those wind collapses brought Paul’s boat up and shortly past at the top of the course. Thereafter they were never more than a boat length or two apart; Adam sneaking a ten second lead at the finish.

As the backmarkers started their 2nd lap, the wind seemed to be strengthening slightly and they all kept going, rather than deciding to retire. At the front, Jane Anderson had gained a substantial lead and when the race was shortened to 2 laps after 40 minutes, she crossed the line over two and a half minutes ahead of Nathan Pollard.  Lasers took the first four places on the water and retained them when the handicaps were applied.

By 1pm the wind had more or less died entirely and the last two boats (the Bosun of Brian Pollard & Cilla Gilbert and the Topper of Vicki Duncalf) took around 90 minutes to finish the two laps – a tribute to their determination.

Results:

  1. Jane Anderson (Laser Full)
  2. Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)
  3. Penny Abbott (Laser Full)
  4. Linda Spiller (Laser Full)
  5. Adam Hilton (Solo)
  6. Paul Whybrow (Solo)
  7. Mike and Vicci Herbert-Coulson (Wayfarer)

PM: Ladies/Junior/Gents/Gosling 4

The start was delayed because boats needed to be moved in preparation for boat park drainage work and the back markers from the midday race (and the officials) needed time to digest their lunch.  By then the sea breeze had belatedly kicked in to give quite a good north-easterly wind, probably reaching Force 3.  The course was amended to start with a long beat up to Pinky and zig-zags on the way back giving several testing gybes as the windspeed picked up.  Several helms got to the line too early and had to turn back (including Linda Spiller and Adam Hilton)  The best starter was Cilla Gilbert now helming the Bosun, but she lost her early advantage as she didn’t persuade it to point as high as the rest of the fleet. The Wayfarer began just behind – and by contrast – pointed extremely close to the wind. It was soon in lead and first round Pinky at the top of the course.  However there were problems with the spinnaker on the downwind which resulted in only a small lead over the Lasers of Nathan Pollard, Jane Anderson and Penny Abbott at the end of first lap. A lap later, the Wayfarer had a hundred yard lead and the spinnaker reaches were going better.  Of the Lasers, Nathan had an inside overlap on Jane at Dam Green.

As for the Solos, Adam Hilton, though re-starting last, soon regained contact with the fleet and was passing competitors. He was a place behind Paul Whybrow at the end of lap 1 and was able to pass during lap 2. On Lap 3 Nathan Pollard by now had 50 yards lead over featherweight Jane Anderson who was finding the big sail on her Laser a handful in the increased wind. At the end the Wayfarer crossed the line 95 seconds ahead of Nathan Pollard with Jane Anderson finishing over a minute further back. On handicap, first three places went to the first three across the line. But the handicaps moved the Bosun helmed by Sally Wills up to 4th – with Vicki Duncalf and her Topper up into 5th and John Dabbs’ Gull into 6th.

Results:

  1. Mike and Viki Herbert-Coulson (Wayfarer)
  2. Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)
  3. Jane Anderson (Laser Full)
  4. Sally Wills and Roger Heasman (Bosun)
  5. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

20th June Midweek Mug race report

Midweek Mug 3

More work was done on the pontoon during the misty, drizzly morning while contractors began digging out the drainage ditch behind the boatpark. Fingers are crossed for a less muddy end of season! By the afternoon the clouds had lifted somewhat and one could see at least as far as Pinky. The fresh north-westerlies were relatively consistent, propelling the fleet leaders around a longish course in under fifteen minutes.

Sally Wills in the Club Bosun started well, crossing the start line first, with Brian Pollard in his Bosun second, Linda Spiller in the first of the single-handers, third, and Graham Joyce on his first outing of the season, fourth. Robin Spiller (Streaker) and John Dabbs (Gull) both took an unconscionable amount of time to cross the line and get going. Two battles developed. The Bosuns took quite different approaches to the beat to West, Brian keeping much further to windward and crossing Sally’s wake only just behind her before they reached the buoy. They set off for Pinky neck and neck but stayed in the same order until lap 3 (of four) when Sally seems to have run amok somewhere near West, collided with Brian and the buoy, done many penalty turns and given Brian a lead he never lost. The other battle concerned Linda Spiller in her Radial and Graham Joyce in his Full. In the initial beat to West Linda extended her lead over Graham to half the width of the Lake, but in the reach to Pinkie and the run back to Middle, Graham made up a lot of ground. In the process both overtook the skirmishing Bosuns. The gap between them continued to extend and contract but Graham, perhaps rusty after eight months off the water, never managed to take full advantage of his Laser’s bigger sail. Meanwhile Robin Spiller tried to make up the ground he had lost at the start and to a large extent succeeded. He passed the Bosuns and was only a handful of seconds behind Graham Joyce at the end. With a better start he could have won. The Dabbs Gull sailed serenely in the rear but with a start like that didn’t deserve the boost up the order that the handicap gave it.

Results:

  1. Linda Spiller (Laser Radial)
  2. Robin Spiller (Streaker)
  3. John Dabbs(Gull)
  4. Brian and Nathan Pollard (Bosun)
  5. Sally Wills and Roger Heasman (Bosun)
  6. Graham Joyce (Laser Full)

The Commodore was Officer of the Day and was grateful to the Vice Commodore for applying the handicaps.

17th June 2018 race report

AM: Sailboat 4

Vicki Duncalf judged the start nicely as usual and sailed with her habitual efficiency with the result that, despite sailing the slowest class of boat in the fleet and finishing some nine minutes behind the leader, the handicap gave her second place. Sally Wills, helming the Club’s Bosun under the tutelage of her crew, Roger Heasman, did even better. She judged the start perfectly, kept ahead of the chasing Lasers, finished four minutes behind the leader and was awarded the victory. It was a grey, misty, drizzly day, and not all that warm. The winds were blowing fairly strongly from points between south and west with gusts strong enough to cause a couple of capsizes in the course of the days’ sailing. Jane Anderson’s choice of a Radial sail for her Laser was probably correct for the conditions but in a three lap, forty six minute race she was unable to establish a big enough lead to overcome her handicap disadvantage. Penny Abbott and Linda Spiller, with 4.7 sails on their Lasers, spent the race in close competition, with Linda leading Penny at the finish, but got no help from the handicap in the results.

Results:

1. Sally Wills and Roger Heasman (Bosun)

2. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

3. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)

4. Adam Hilton (Solo)

5. Linda Spiller (Laser 4.7)

6. Penny Abbott (Laser 4.7)

7. Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun)

Retired: Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)

PM: Pursuit 4

With a pursuit race the handicaps are in effect applied before the start. The slowest competitors, based on past performance, start first, the fastest last. So Vicki Duncalf set off first but over more than an hour’s racing several of those following overtook her. Penny Abbott emerged in the lead at the end with Linda Spiller next. Nathan Pollard, swept through the field to third place, passing his father’s Bosun towards the end. The breeze had freshened and become a little more consistent but by the finish sailors at the far end of the Lake were disappearing in the mist.

1. Penny Abbott (Laser 4.7)

2. Linda Spiller (Laser 4.7)

3. Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)

4. Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun)

5. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)

6. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

7. Roger Heasman (Streaker),

Retired: Adam Hilton (Solo), John Buckett and Sally Wills (Bosun)

Grateful thanks were given to Annie Quartermain and Bob Bennett for running the races and to Mandy Pollard for her photographs.

6th June 2018 Midweek Mug race report

Midweek Mug 1

A glorious sunny day, a light but really quite steady breeze, six boats; what more could UTLSC ask of the first day of the season’s Wednesday racing? Well, the OOD (John Dabbs) might have wanted the breeze to have stayed in the east, on the basis of which he had designed the course, rather than moving well to the north, which made for a reaching start rather than the intended beat. And Linda Spiller might have liked the pin in her tiller to stay pinned rather than finding herself rudderless on the lee shore beyond Dam Red. And Steve Axford might have liked a little more time to get on the water so that he knew the course and didn’t (when leading) have to circle West White until the following boat turned up and told him which the next buoy was.

The Streaker of Robin Spiller was first over the start line or perhaps it was the Solo of Adam Hilton, but it was the full sail Laser of Steve Axford which demanded water at Dam Red and rounded that first buoy in first place with the Solo following, the Streaker next and the Bosun after that with Sally Wills at the helm and her mentor Roger Heasman barking the orders. The first lap ended with Adam Hilton holding a six second lead over Steve Axford and it wasn’t until after Inlet on lap 2 that Steve’s dominance was finally established. He finished the race a minute and a half ahead. Adam and Robin continued to skirmish with the Streaker a boat length ahead at Inlet on lap 2 and again at Pinkie only for the extra square footage of the Solo’s sail to pull it ahead each time. The Bosun and Geoff Floyd’s Solo were rarely far apart with Geoff twenty seconds ahead at the end of lap 1 but Sally thirty seconds ahead at the finish of lap 2. Eventually Linda Spiller’s determined fight back got her past the Floyd Solo. The handicaps punished Steve for not knowing the course.

Results:

1.       Adam Hilton (Solo)

2.       Sally Wills and Roger Heasman (Bosun)

3.       Robin Spiller (Streaker)

4.       Steve Axford (Laser Full)

5.       Geoff Floyd (Solo)

6.       Linda Spiller (Laser Full)

Many thanks to John Dabbs who ran the race, to Steve Axford who (in the absence of both the computer and John Duncalf) calculated the handicapped results and to Roger Heasman who put the safety boat to bed and closed everything up afterwards.

3rd June 2018 race report

AM: Cup Race 4

James Pollard and Steve Axford in full-sailed Lasers were first to cross the start line on their way to Dam Green buoy where James took the inside line. Robin Spiller (Streaker) followed and then most of the rest of the fleet arrived at once, some on port tack, some on starboard. The result was a bunch of boats sandwiched between the buoy on the inside and the Wayfarer on the out. Several helms were severely delayed. The Wayfarer was fourth after the longish run to Middle with Viki Herbert-Coulson getting good use out of the spinnaker but by Pinkie the charging double-hander had got past two Lasers and a Streaker and took a lead that was never relinquished and extended to some four minutes over Steve Axford after the four laps. For the most part the light south easterly winds held up and were powering the boats to fifteen minute laps but helms needed to be thoroughly alert to shifts in direction if they were to make the most of their tacking. Third at the finish was James Pollard with Jane Anderson’s Laser Radial fourth and Nathan Pollard fifth. John Dabbs and Sally Wills had got the club’s Kestrel past Robin Spiller to finish sixth. There was an unfortunate mistake at race command and the official results with handicaps applied could not be produced.

PM: Ladies, Junior, Gosling Gents Cups 3

In an attempt to avoid the congestion of the previous race the start was moved to Line 2 with Home 1 as the first buoy to round. With the winds still blowing from the east a number of helms saw an advantage in starting from right under the end of the pontoon in order to make the buoy in one starboard tack. Unfortunately there were again too many boats in too little water; casualties included Steve Axford with a serious delay and Adam Hilton stuck on the lee shore! The Wayfarer was only just leading at the end of lap 1, Jane Anderson, Nathan Pollard and Sue Murray were only a few seconds behind after an eleven minute lap of the now shorter course. Sue Murray got herself up to second on the second lap and stayed there. She was only a minute behind the Wayfarer after four laps. And Steve Axford was hauling himself up from last to as high as fifth, only to have the Dabbs/Wills Kestrel overtake him on the last lap.

Results:

1. Mike and Viki Herbert-Coulson (Wayfarer)

2. Paul Whybrow (Solo)

3. Sue Murray (Laser Radial)

4. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)

5. Robin Spiller (Streaker)

6. Adam Hilton (Solo)

7. Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)

8. Steve Axford (Laser Full)

9. Linda Spiller (Laser Radial)

10. John Dabbs and Sally Wills (Kestrel)

Retired: Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun)

Grateful thanks were given to Roger Heasman, Pavol Rovensky and James Pollard for running the races and to Mandy Pollard for her photographs.

27th May 2018 race report

For a BH weekend it was remarkably quiet at UTLSC with only 7 boats on the water.  The wayward gusty wind from over the dam proved challenging, as did the need to avoid water close to banks occupied by those engaged in a fishing competition.

AM: Commodore’s Cup 3

All entrants in the midday race were of different class with the fastest, Mike & Viki Herbert-Coulson’s Wayfarer leading throughout, followed as could be expected by Nathan Pollard, who expertly recovered from a capsize in his Laser radial and Robin Spiller’s Streaker, but there were ongoing tussles for position between the Topper and Laser 4.7 as well as the Bosun and Solo further down he fleet.  With handicap applied the final results were as on the water, with the exception of Jane Anderson whose Topper gained 3 places.

Results:

  1. Mike Coulson and Viki Herbert-Coulson (Wayfarer)
  2. Jane Anderson (Topper)
  3. Robin Spiller (Streaker)
  4. Nathan Pollard (Laser Radial)
  5. Linda Spiller (Laser 4.7)
  6. Brian Pollard and Sally Wills (Bosun)
  7. John Savage (Solo)

PM: Pursuit 3

The Bosun, followed by Topper and Streaker led those slower dinghies trying to maintain their relative head start, while faster boats successively set off to chase.  Nathan Pollard was again the victim of a sudden gust but quickly righted his capsized Laser, managing to gain one place overall, as did Linda Spiller’s Laser radial. Jane Anderson and Robin Spiller both lost 2 places, while Roger Heasman, returning to his Streaker gained 2.  He took the lead early on, fighting off the pursuing Wayfarer, which had sped through the fleet from starting last to clinch a final second place.

Results:

  1. Roger Heasman (Streaker)
  2. Mike Coulson and Viki Herbert-Coulson (Wayfarer)
  3. Linda Spiller (Laser radial)
  4. Jane Anderson (Topper)
  5. Nathan Pollard (Laser radial)
  6. Brian Pollard and Sally Wills (Bosun)
  7. Robin Spiller (Streaker)

20th May 2018 race report

AM: Sailboat Trophy 3

Bob Sampson and Nathan Pollard, both with full-sized sails on their Lasers, had a race long battle which the lap chart does nothing to reveal (Sampson no. 1 laps 1,2&3). They finished two seconds apart as they had been at many points in a race conducted in warm sunshine and, until the end, serviceable if highly variable winds – ‘gusty puffs’ as Jane Anderson put it. These winds were coming from points to the south so the start was towards the dam. Vicki Duncalf (Topper) and Adam Hilton (Solo) reckoned starting from the end of the pontoon might mean reaching Dam Green without tacking. It worked well for the Solo which was first round the buoy with the Sampson/Pollard scrap already taking shape behind it. Their Lasers were away before they reached the middle of the Lake and at the finish were five minutes in front of the next boat, Jane Anderson’s Laser Radial which she had squeezed into third place by cutting the corner into Inlet with dagger board up and hull canted over to clear the shallow water! The wind abandoned the rear of the field and it was nearly half an hour before the back markers could get to their sandwiches.

Results:

1. Bob Sampson (Laser Full)

2. Nathan Pollard (Laser Full)

3. Adam Hilton (Solo)

4. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)

5. Robin Spiller (Streaker)

6. Sue Murray (Laser Radial)

7. Linda Spiller (Laser Full)

8. Jane Chadney (Laser Radial)

9. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

10. Sally Wills and Roger Heasman (Bosun)

11. Cilla Gilbert and Brian Pollard (Bosun)

PM: Tamar Memorial Trophy 4

The wind was even more variable for the afternoon race with those helms at the pontoon end of the startline, which faced up the Lake this time, getting a useful gust denied to others. Bob Sampson, Nathan Pollard and Vicki Duncalf were first away but no one could stay with Bob, Nathan having switched to a Radial sail because the Tamar race series requires consistency of hull and sail. Paul Whybrow, in his familiar red Solo, did best at keeping up and was second at the end of lap 1, a couple of minutes behind, with Linda Spiller (Laser Full) third and Jane Chadney (Laser Radial) fourth. Jane Anderson was fifth at the end of the first lap but had hauled herself up to second by the end of the second. However neither the minute’s lead she had over Paul Whybrow at the finish, nor even the three minutes that Bob Sampson had, was enough to overcome the advantageous handicap of the Solo and Paul Whybrow gained the victory.

Results:

1. Paul Whybrow (Solo)

2. Bob Sampson (Laser Full)

3. Jane Anderson (Laser Radial)

4. Vicki Duncalf (Topper)

5. Linda Spiller (Laser Full)

6. Jane Chadney (Laser Radial)

7. Roger Heasman and Sally Wills (Bosun)

8. Nathan Pollard (Laser Radial)

9. Brian Pollard and Cilla Gilbert (Bosun)

Retired: Adam Hilton (Solo)

Grateful thanks were given to John Weller and Alan Comber for running the races and to Mandy Pollard for her photographs.
